Much of the humor was based on its comic portrayals of modern conveniences, reinterpreted using Stone Age 'technology.' Most notably were their cars, complete with absence of floorboards to allow them to be 'foot-powered.'。20世纪70年代末80年代初，中国大地百业待兴。某工厂高级焊工老铁（李幼斌 饰），为人耿直、业务精湛，全厂上下都对他甚为折服。他先后收了两个徒弟，谢思雨（吕行 饰）和欧阳水（郭家铭 饰）。谢为人沉稳，但心机颇重，欧阳则忠厚老实，乐于助人。偶然的机缘，老铁还收了令他颇为头疼的小徒弟许风（夏雨 饰）。许风的父母在他很小时便远赴非洲援建，由于疏于教导，因此许风有如脱缰野马，惹祸不断。后来父母在非洲牺牲，许风被特招入厂，却依然不见消停。即便成为老铁的徒弟，他和两位师哥乃至师傅之间也经常发生摩擦。 岁月流逝，这些质朴的工人上演着各自的人生悲喜剧……。
