每一个人多多少少都有着不愿意告诉别人的秘密或者想要摆脱的过去，翠西（凯特·布兰切特 Cate Blanchett 饰）也不例外，曾经，她过着如此荒唐的生活，干了许多难以启齿的坏事，如今，良心发现的她决心洗心革面，重新走上生活的正规。 在母亲杰尼尔（诺妮·哈泽赫斯 Noni Hazlehurst 饰）的帮助下，翠西的“洗白”计划顺利的进行着，可是，哥哥雷（马丁·亨德森 Martin Henderson 饰）、男友强尼（达斯汀·阮 Dustin Nguyen 饰）和好友里昂（雨果·维文 Hugo Weaving 饰）的接连出现似乎预示着翠西将无法摆脱灰暗的过去。翠西好不容易建立起来的信心被这些不速之客逐渐的摧毁着，而她和母亲之间艰难修复起来的关系也面临着巨大的考验。。故事发生在二十世纪三十年代的上海。二十年前的一场家族恩仇铸成一段日后的悲喜人生。岁月如梭，当年从襁褓中分离的杨慕初（钟汉良 饰）、杨慕次（钟汉良 饰）兄弟俩，如今一个是留学海外学成归来的著名的医生；一个则留学日本，归国后参加了中共地下党。慕初在英国留学期间，曾参加“雷霆”科学研究，而此时日军在上海正研制一种神秘的细菌武器，一旦研制成功，将对人类造成极大的伤害。日军的这一计划同时被国民党军统局和中共地下党所知悉，国共双方都在第一时间作出决定，不能让日军的阴谋得逞。潜伏在中国数十年的日军王牌间谍徐玉真（李颖 饰），正是他策划了二十多年前的杨家家族惨案，如今他又要故伎重演。杨家两兄弟由刚开始的误解、猜忌，慢慢转变成同仇敌忾的战友......。In this bitingly satirical film Peter Slovan, a continuous source of trouble for the film functionaries of the socialist Slovakia, tackles an evergreen topic – the corruptive effects of power. Barnabáš Kos, a triangle player at a symphonic orchestra, is suddenly promoted to serve as the head of the said institution, even though both he and his superiors deem him completely unfit for the task. Encouraged in equal parts by this unexpected recognition and the servile praise of his colleagues, Kos’s modesty starts to gradually vanish. The erstwhile bashful and aloof percussionist quickly becomes aware of the advantages of his new office, and begins to realise his increasingly ludicrous artistic ambitions. Ultimately, the submissive marionette turns into a source of public humiliation, and his astonishing career finds an abrupt end. Orchestra serves here as a microcosm that grotesquely reflects the absurd and tragicomic mechanisms of the paranoid apparatus of power.
